副題 Asian-American Literature: Monica Soneユs Nisei Daughter and the Japanese American Experience
授業概要 This seminar focuses on the experience of the Japanese-American community in the early and mid-twentieth century as revealed through Monica Soneユs autobiographical novel, Nisei Daughter.
学修目標 Literature is the medium through which we will examine the experiences of Japanese-Americans in the early and mid-twentieth century. As we read the novel we will examine the situation of the immigrant generation in the early part of the twentieth century. We will also look at the situation of the second-generation Japanese-Americans, how they were similar to, and different from, their immigrant parents. We will pay particular attention to how these second- and third-generation Americans constructed their own sense of identity, how they responded to the Pacific War, and how they were treated at the time by their fellow Americans, and their place in the American society after the end of the war.
授業計画 Seminar is supposed to be a student-centered course. The teacher will provide background information on Japanese immigration to the US, and on the history of Japanese immigrants in the early part of the twentieth century. Students will take turns presenting the chapters for weekly reading. They will be responsible for identifying and commenting on characters, plot development, and themes that arise. They will also lead discussion on themes and issues that arise. Those not responsible for presentation will be responsible for preparing a list of questions they wish to ask or discuss.
