副題 Literature and the British Empire: Christianity and Colonialism in Stories by Chinua Achebe and Ngugi wa Thiongユo
授業概要 We will examine the impact upon the peoples and cultures of Africa of the arrival of Christianity and European colonial rule. We will begin with an introduction to postcolonial theory and also missiological theory. We will then examine a selection of stories by Chinua Achebe of Nigeria and Ngugi wa Thiongユ o of Kenya.
学修目標 The purpose of the course is three-fold: to teach the students to read fiction more perceptively and reflectively, noting in particular the relationship between the text and the historic and cultural context which produced it; to raise in the students a greater awareness of and appreciation for the peoples, cultures, and countries of Africa; and to gain a deeper understanding of the consequences of European colonialism for both the colonizer and the colonized.
