副題 Issues in Modern Society
授業概要 Throughout this course, students will be encouraged to consider and analyze the relevance of certain issues to modern society, as well as their own role in reflecting and influencing modern society. It will feature a number of general themes or modules for analysis and discussion, and participants can expect to deal with aspects of women in the workplace; gender discrimination; modern romance; education and the greying of society These will all be based on analyses of materials in English taken from a variety of sources such as journalism, film, TV documentaries, short stories, poetry, art and music. It is also intended that spoken and written styles of discourse will benefit from occasional reviews of topic-related lexical items.
学修目標 It is hoped that this course will acquaint participants with a number of pertinent social issues through which they will be actively encouraged to develop their ability to analyse the topics under review and to respond critically and rationally in preparation and discussion.
授業計画 All classes will require analysis and discussion of a selection of materials from those introduced in the Course Outline.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Study and preparation outside of class will vary from week to week depending on the assignment. The instructor will give adequate notice of any due assignments as well as advice on how long they will take to complete, and will ensure that students are not given excessive workloads. Weekly homework assignments will not exceed 60 minutes, but two 450 - word essay assignments will require preparation exceeding 60 minutes.
評価方法 Evaluation will be based on a continuous assessment of a studentユs work and effort in class, and will take into account the grades given for the various assignments during the semester together with the grade given for one 550 word essay related to a selected course topic.

Any change in the above percentages will be communicated to the students at the beginning of the semester. Self-evaluation will also be a feature of the course, and students will be required to provide feedback on the program at the end of the semester. Absence from more than 2 classes will seriously jeopardize a studentユs chances of obtaining a passing grade for the semester. Late presentation of 3 or more homework assignments will seriously jeopardize a studentユs chances of obtaining a grade higher than メCモ for the semester.
