副題 Quest for the Humanities: Exploring Society, Morality, Culture, and Philosophies through Star Trek
授業概要 The aim of this course is to examine social, moral, cultural, and philosophical issues by using television episodes from the American science fiction entertainment franchise Star Trek. Star Trek is a multi-cultural, cross-cultural, and intergenerational phenomenon. It is arguably the most influential science fiction TV series in history. Issues including gender, minorities, theories of the universe, perspectives on other worlds, and considerations of time and space were examined in the series, thus making it a rich resource for studying societies and social interaction.
The core of the course concentrates on episodes from the original series, which first aired from 1966 to 1969, and The Next Generation series, which first aired from 1987 to 1994. These episodes will introduce students to cultural contexts different to Japan at the same time as presenting views of American history and universal issues of morality and ethics that affect all people. It is an interdisciplinary course that incorporates themes from language study, cultural history, media studies, and philosophy.
Apart from introducing students to the possibilities Star Trek offers as a learning resource, one of the goals is to encourage students to debate universal issues that affect people in different societies in order to develop their cross-cultural communication skills. Although the episodes are set centuries into the future, the issues the students discuss in the course are actually current and universal.
