副題 The History of Pop Music
授業概要 In this course, students will deepen their appreciation of popular music by listening to various genres, writing reviews, researching the cultural background to musical trends and examining the effects they have had on the wider culture.
学修目標 The broad aim of the course is for students to learn what it was like to grow up at a different time and in different places. Students should gain an appreciation of a wide variety of genres of western pop music and learn to review and critique songs and performers. Students will improve their listening skills and learn a large amount of vocabulary related to the arts and cultural studies. At the end of the course, students will make a presentation on a musical genre of their choice.
授業計画 1. What is pop music? Blues and the roots of rock’n’roll
2. 50s rock and roll.
3. Bob Dylan and America in the 60s.   
4. 60s soul.
5. The Beatles part 1.
6. The Beatles part 2.
7. David Bowie
8. Punk.
9. Disco.
10. Reggae.
11. Electronic Music.
12. 80s and 90s pop.
13. Rap.
14. Change and stagnation in the new century.
15. Presentation and final assessment.
授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Students will have to read texts, learn vocabulary, listen to a large amount of music and prepare presentations.
評価方法 Presentation 25%, Quizzes 50%, Participation 25%
