副題 English for the International Tourism Industry
授業概要 The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the language of the travel and tourism industry. Through authentic readings, students will learn the vocabulary and the expressions that are commonly used in the tourism industry. Real-life situations will be introduced to promote interaction among the students. Speaking and listening tasks will be emphasized. Quizzes will be given on a regular basis. At the end of the semester, students will plan itineraries, introduce their travel plans, and lead the class on a guided tour. Lessons will be taught entirely in English. Enrollment is limited to 35 students.
学修目標 By the end of this course, the students will have a strong understanding of the English that is used in the travel and tourism industry, such as how to plan travel itineraries, book air flights and hotel reservations, deal with customer complaints, and conduct tours.

Unit 1: Different kinds of people
Dealing with enquiries, dealing with customers and staff
Week 2: Unit 2: International travel
Making reservations, organizing a trip, writing itineraries
Week 3: Unit 3: Phone calls
Making domestic and international calls, taking messages
Week 4: Unit 4: Food and drink
Making restaurant orders, table manners, restaurant conversations
Week 5: Unit 5: Correspondence
Responding to enquiries, making confirmations, checking schedules
Week 6: Unit 6: Accommodations
Making hotel reservations, choosing the right hotel
Week 7: Review Lesson and Test
Week 8: Unit 7: Money
Exchanging foreign currency, Payment for services
Week 9: Unit 8: Traveling around
Renting a car, taking a bus/train tour, buying tickets
Students will begin to plan their itineraries to a foreign country
Week 10:Unit 9: Problems
Dealing with customer complaints, dealing with hotel staff
Week 11: Unit 10: Attractions and activities
Conducting tours, giving advice and suggestions to customers
Week 12: Understanding immigration and customs issues
Week 13:Cultural issues
Week 14:The economy of cheap travel
Week 15:Student presentations of guided tours.

評価方法 The following will be used for deciding grades:
- Two team projects: 20%
- Participation : 20%
- Mid-term exam : 30%
- Final exam 30%
