Philippine Culture and Current Issues

【授業概要】

This course is designed to give students basic knowledge and better understanding of the diverse cultural aspects and current affairs in the Philippines. They will get a glimpse of these aspects, explore and analyze the blending of foreign and native influences as well as the traditional and modern life represented in music, dance, language, food, festivals, beliefs, values, travel destinations; and contemporary issues and events. The class will feature actual demonstrations and learning of traditional dances, games and a taste of Filipino cuisine. To highlight their Philippine cultural experience, students will have a face-to-face cultural exchange/interaction with university students in the Philippines through video-conferencing.

【学修目標】

The goal of the course is for students to be well-informed, to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the Philippine culture and its current situation.

The students will study the geography, historical and cultural background including the arts, values, beliefs, socio-economic and political systems, etc. and be aware of the contemporary issues and events such as people power, overseas workers, population and health issues, and economic development. To achieve these goals research, technology, discussion, analysis and critical thinking skills will be enhanced. Students will be asked to choose topics to research on and present to class. The teacher will also present and input supplementary information about the topic of the day.

【授業時間外の学習(準備学習等)】

Students will research on the topic they have chosen; prepare a one-page written report and present it in class. If a student is not the reporter of the day, for homework, s/he writes her observations and feedback of the report heard and discussed. A Philippine current news item will also be submitted in class weekly.

Research work and homework 40% Class participation 30%

Final presentation 20% Attendance 10%

Teacher’s collection of Filipiniana reference books, magazines, videos, etc. will be made available to the students. Extension use of the internet, news articles, Filipino interviewees are other sources of information.
