【授業概要】

Students will work individually, in pairs and in groups and be assigned a different region from Africa. Students will research the language families (ethnic groups) and their culture/customs, food , traditional music and cultural differences from their region. Students will run the group discussions( jigsaw type discussions) and will present their findings in class.

【学修目標】

The goal of the course is to introduce Africa and how diverse Africa is as a continent( not a country) both geographically, and in their way of life, it’s Cultures, values ,beliefs, Food, Art. The goal is to help students:

-- See Africa differently and confront their media stereotypes and misrepresentations of Africa.

--Be able to describe the practices, traditions/customs of Africa and relate the cultural characteristics differences and similarities with that of Japan. Student.

-- To understand the impact of colonialism on the continent and its affects on modern Africa.

【授業時間外の学習(準備学習等)】

Student’s participation and contributions are the main core/essence of this class. This class has no assigned textbook, Students will be required to do a lot of research online and read books on African cultures in the Library. Watch some video clips on you tube on Africa as part of homework. In-class group discussions/presentation activities will take up 80% of the time, the teacher expects students to do their research outside of class and be ready to do group preparing or discussions. Students should set high standard goals for their academic achievements not just the grade.

Attendance and participation 50. Final presentation project. 50
