副題 Language, politics, media, and gender
授業概要 This course analyses sociolinguistic texts written on the relationship between language, society, and power. Language plays significant roles in the way social structures and relationships are maintained and reinforced. Language is also a vehicle through which we realize social order. By deepening our understanding of the various roles language plays in our everyday life as well as in the media and politics, we can function more effectively as liaison persons and/or policy makers/implementers.

Students will read texts on sociolinguistics in English. Students will be expected to comprehend overall meaning as well as details of information, and to present opinions on the issues discussed.

Both English and Japanese are used as languages of instruction.

Active class participation is required, NOT optional.
学修目標 By the end of the semester, you will be able to do the following:
1. Get accustomed to reading (rather easy)academic materials written in English
2. Grasp the general meaning of a text after reading it once or twice
3. Discover the joy of reading and comprehending academic materials written in English
4. Discuss and summarize in writing in English some basic sociolinguistic ideas and arguments
