副題 Language, society, and identity
授業概要 Building on the knowledge gained in the spring semester's Bunkenkoudoku I, this course further analyses various aspects of the relationship between language, society and power. Once again, the focus is on reading academic texts written on sociolinguistics, and students are expected to learn to appreciate reading academic texts as well as content information: the relationship between language, society, and power. This course should help you learn how to use language effectively as a way of understanding what others have expressed and of persuading others to understand what you mean. These are important skills for those who want to function effectively as liaison persons and/or policy maker/implementers. Sociolinguistic knowledge should help you apply these skills in ways that are appropriate for the socio-cultural contexts of the situation.

In addition to reading texts on sociolinguistics in English, students are expected to present opinions on the issues introduced in the text.

Note: The languages of instruction for this course are English and Japanese. The instructor will try to use English whenever possible, but Japanese will also be used for clarification. Also, active class participation is required, NOT optional.
学修目標 By the end of the semester, you will be able to do the following:
1. Get accustomed to reading academic texts written on sociolinguistics
2. Learn to appreciate the information presented in the text by connecting it to your own understanding of the world
3. Rediscover the joy of reading and comprehending academic material written in English
4. Discuss and summarize in writing texts written on a variety of sociolinguistic issues
5. Carry out mini research on several sociolinguistic themes and present it in front of class
