副題	The American Neighborhood Novel: Chaim Potokユs The Chosen and the Jewish-American Experience
授業概要	This seminar focuses on the experience of the Jewish-American community in the early and mid-twentieth century as revealed through Chaim Potokユs novel, The Chosen.
学修目標	Literature is the medium through which we will examine the experiences of members of Orthodox Jewish-Americans in the early and mid-twentieth century. As we read the novel we will examine the situation of Jewish immigrants to the United States. We will take particular interest in the differences and tesnions between the Orthodox and Hasidic communities in New York City in the early and mid-twentieth century. We will also look at the situation of the second-generation Jewish-Americans, how they were similar to, and how they differed from, their immigrant parents. We will pay particular attention to how these second- and third-generation Americans constructed their own sense of identity, how they responded to their exposure to and contact with American secular society.
授業計画	In general a seminar is supposed to be student-centered. The teacher will provide background information on Judaism and its different branches, on immigration to the US, and on the history of Jewish communities in New York. Students, in pairs of two, will take turns presenting the chapters for weekly reading. They will be responsible for identifying and commenting on characters, plot development, and themes that arise. They will also lead discussion on the themes and issues that arise in the novel.
