授業概要 | This is an introductory level course that will provide students with a solid foundation in semantics, i.e. the study of meaning. The course will focus on one particular aspect of meaning: compositionality. The principle of compositionality states that the meaning of a whole is composed, or made up, from the meanings of its parts. We will turn this simple idea into a formal analysis by first developing some simple formal tools and then applying them to successively more complex cases. The semantics we will develop is an interpretive semantics, meaning that it takes syntactic structures as input and derives interpretations from them. It is an important aspect of the theory to be developed that it can be combined with standard theories of syntax. The syntax needed for this course, however, is very basic and will be provided in class. Students will not be required to know any syntax beforehand. |
学修目標 | There are two central aims of the course. The first is to give students the tools necessary to compute truth conditions for sentences from the meanings of the words and the structure they occur in. The second is to show how different assumptions about word meaning and syntactic structure affect the semantic theory that uses them. |
