授業概要 | Throughout this course, students will be encouraged to consider and analyze the relevance of certain issues to modern society, as well as their own role in reflecting and influencing modern society. It will feature a number of general themes or modules for analysis and discussion, and participants can expect to deal with aspects of women in the workplace; gender discrimination; modern romance; education and the greying of society These will all be based on analyses of materials in English taken from a variety of sources such as journalism, film, TV documentaries, short stories, poetry, art and music. It is also intended that spoken and written styles of discourse will benefit from occasional reviews of topic-related lexical items. |
学修目標 | It is hoped that this course will acquaint participants with a number of pertinent social issues through which they will be actively encouraged to develop their ability to analyse the topics under review and to respond critically and rationally in preparation and discussion. |
授業計画 | All classes will require analysis and discussion of a selection of materials from those introduced in the Course Outline. 授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) | Study and preparation time outside of classes will vary from week to week depending on the assignment. The instructor will give adequate notice of any due assignments well in advance as well as advice on how long they will take to complete, and will ensure that students are not given excessive workloads. |
評価方法 | Regular, punctual class attendance and presentation of homework; Conscientious class preparation and participation; Two, 550+ word essays related to selected course topics; and, A final report. |
