【授業概要】

Students will do two separate debates on teams. Before the first debate they will learn about supporting opinions, organizing arguments and refuting supports. Before the second debate, they will learn more about using and challenging supports, attacking arguments and refuting attacks on arguments.

The goal of this class is to introduce students to debate format and enable them to participate in a debate.

３．Supporting an opinion: Types of support.

４．Organizing the first speech: Introductions, signposts and conclusions.

５．Refuting Explanations: Types of refutation.

６．In-class Debates: Half debates.

７．In-class Debates: Half debates.

８．Mid-term exam.

９．Challenging supports: Looking at validity.

10．Organizing refutations: Refutation format.

11．Reviewing the whole process: Flowing a full debate.

13．Judging a debate: Manner, method and matter.

14．Full debates.

15．Full debates.

16．Final Exam.

【授業時間外の学習（準備学習等）】

Students will need to research information and prepare handouts for the debates. They will also need to practice their speeches before debate day.

Debates 60%, Participation 20% and exams 20%
