授業概要 This is a reading, writing, and discussion class. Students will read a short article in English before class, and discuss and write about that article during class.
学修目標 To be able to read short, interesting newspaper articles in English about Japanese and Asian culture, economy, and social life, and then discuss and write about the ideas.
授業計画 Week 1: Discussing the future of modern Japan.
Week 2: Developing Japan’s relations with Asia.
Week 3: Taking care of the Japanese environment.
Week 4: Understanding the Japanese mind: anime and manga.
Week 5: Playing in cyberspace.
Week 6: Reflecting upon Japan’s education system.
Week 7: Working for a Japanese company.
Week 8: Exploring Asian religions.
Week 9: Reading modern Japanese authors.
Week 10: Looking at Japanese art.
Week 11: Changing roles of Japanese women.
Week 12: Praying at the shrine of memories.
Week 13: (Un)Covering the young homeless.
Week 14: Communicating between generations.
Week 15: Presentations.
授業時間外の学習（準備学習など） Students will read a short article each week outside class, and draw a mind-map of the ideas. Also, if students do not finish the weekly writing task in class, then they will complete the writing task for homework.
評価方法 Mind-maps of weekly readings (12 mind-maps, 5% each): 60%
Final presentation: 20%
Final report: 20%
