@@The research conducted in 2006 surveyed NPO involvement in the provision of care for elderly citizens in Japan. It surveyed NPOs nationwide using lists of NPO registered with each of the 47 prefecture administrations, about 26,000 organizations in all. A significant part of the research budget was devoted to hiring a graduate student to gather data from these lists. Using that data the research then proceeded to classify organizations as follows:
  1) number of registered NPOs in each prefecture;
  2) number of registered NPOs in each prefecture that carry out activities directed at elderly citizens;
  3) a typology of those activities;
  4) incidence of NPOs classified in number 2 as a proportion of total NPOs in each prefecture
  5) incidence of registered NPOs classified in number 2 compared to the elderly population in each prefecture;
  6) incidence of registered NPOs classified in number 2 compared to the incidence of shakai fukushi hojin in each prefecture

@@Due to limitations of the data from prefecture sources a further round of research focused on NPOs in Aichi Prefecture. The research considered the distribution of NPOs classified in number 2 by municipality; participation by older citizens in registered NPOs; and gender distribution of members active in voluntary organizations that provide services to the elderly.
@@The results of the research will be published in The Demographic Challenge:A Handbook About Japan, a scholarly book edited by Florian Coulmas at the Deutsches Institut fur Japanstudien. The first round of revisions of the completed manuscript was carried out in February. A first cut focusing on NPOs in Aichi was due to be published in January in Academia: Humanities and Social Sciences (84). I expect to continue to expand this research in future.
