Œ¤‹†‰Û‘è NursesfPropensity for Migration: The Case of the Philippines
Œ¤‹†ŽÀÑ‚ÌŠT—v
This paper looks into the demands for nurses, the increase of nursing schools and the propensity of nursing students to work abroad. Furthermore, the paper explores the possibility of Philippine nurses to work in Japan.
The demand for nurses is obtained from research based on U.S. periodicals and internet sources about nursing shortages. Nursesf propensity for migration came from the results of interviews and survey questionnaires from Divine Word College of Legazpi and College of the Holy Spirit, Manila.
Results show that most students want to seek employment abroad ? especially the United States. Records from the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency show that most nurses go to Saudi Arabia and not to the United States. On the other hand, research shows that more than half of foreign nurses in the U.S. are from the Philippines. Most probably, Philippine nurses either go to the U.S. under family reunification program, or indirectly via Saudi Arabia, U.K., or Canada.
With regards to nurses for Japan, interviews with Philippine nursing students reveal that interest to working in Japan is very low. The main reasons are language requirement, general lack of interesting incentives in the face of almost immediate employment in the U.S. and elsewhere.
The paper concludes that nursing students do not really know yet the realities of migration. They may want to go to the U.S. but not be able to because of expenses and difficult examinations. Japan should offer more incentives in order to attract more nurses to work in the country. Countries of destination, who enjoy the labor of Philippine nurses, should subsidize health care in the country which is feeling the pinch of nurse shortages.
