As planned, I conducted a research project exploring relationships between religious organizations and civil society organizations in contemporary Japan. This research tried to link academic research from the sociology of religion with that of the nonprofit sector. As part of the research I hired a former seminar student to find data on religious organizations that operate nursing homes as the basis for a case study on religious organizations in the nonprofit welfare sector. That case study was reported briefly in Academia (below) and will be reported more fully in a journal article to be submitted in 2014.
During the year I combined this grant with a Pache grant for overseas travel in order to present my research findings at the International Society for the Sociology of Religion meeting held in Finland from June 26-29, 2013.
My research output is listed below. In addition, I am expanding the research for submission as an academic article to the peer-reviewed Asian Journal of Social Sciences as part of a special issue on civil society, philanthropy, and religion in Asia. The submission date is April 30.
