Definition of Rare Books
- Japanese books are those that were printed or copied in or before 1868.
- Old Chinese books (including Japanese reprints and Korean books) are those that were printed or copied in or before 1912 (Republic of China). However, this does not include books bound using Western style methods.
- Western books are those that were printed or copied in or before 1850.
- Other matters
The value of an item may be judged to be high for the following reasons:
- few copies exist.
- notes have been added by members of famous families.
- it is a manuscript written by a member of a famous family, a letter, a hand-copied item, an autographic work, or a hand-written manuscript.
- other intrinsic reasons.
Materials that can be used
As a general rule, this applies to all materials, but please understand that in some cases viewing may not be possible because of the condition of the materials.

- ※1 If you wish to use a rare book you must make an application in advance. Please contact Service counter (Circulation) at least two days in advance (except Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the periods 6-20 August and 23 December to 6 January). If you wish to take photographs using a digital camera please state this.

- ※2 If you do not possess a user card for the academic year in question before viewing materials you will need to fill in a Nanzan University Reiners Central User Registration Application Form. Please bring a form of personal identification with you such as your driving license. You do not need a letter of introduction. Please check on the Library's website.
- ※3 If you wish photograph materials using a digital camera please fill in a "Request to Photograph Library Materials." However, please understand that requests may be turned down depending upon the condition of the materials in question. Users are to bring their own digital camera and flash photography is not permitted.
- ※4Please note that you must apply for permission to post (online) or publish photographs you have taken of materials.
